C19th Chinese Export Trade Camphor Wood Brass-bound Military Campaign Writing Box .

19th century
Description

C19th Chinese Export trade camphor wood brass-bound military campaign writing box.

High quality brass-bound military officer’s solid camphor wood portable campaign writing box and slope . The top with a retractable mechanism tambour lid , which opens when the front drawer is used . Inside the tambour closure is a rising ‘sprung ’ stationary compartment fitted with divisions and pigeon-holes .

The fold-over lid opening to form a baize-lined writing slope . The interior with ‘secret’ drawer compartments and complete with original circular ruler .

The lid inlaid with a fine ebony re-entrant corner panel line . The edges of the top with protective brass banding , the sides each fitted with a quality recessed brass carrying handle , the drawer also fitted with a recessed brass handle . The lid has a brass name-plate panel to the centre , which bears a later presentation inscription.

In excellent original condition with no damage, losses or repairs. The sweet-scented camphor has a rich golden patina and colour . The use of Chinese camphor alludes to its probable intended use in tropical climes of a military campaign, as this timber is renowned for its insect repellent properties.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
