M Lees and Sons has dated this piece to the 1860s.
. The original pair carved in Carrara marble , were commissioned by King Louis XV of France for the trough or horse pond , at the entrance to the grounds of his Chateau de Marly . The originals now exhibited at the Louvre Museum, Paris .

This fine pair of bronze reductions convey the power and presence of the originals , have a good original surface and patina, with only minor highlights caused from historic handling and gentle cleaning . Raised on ovoid naturalistically-modelled bases each with cast foliage to the foreground.
In excellent condition with only minor faults in the attachment of the reins to the stallion heads .
