A marvellous hand coloured aquatint engraving depicting a scene in the betting booth at the races.
A cautionary tale, this print depicts a wealthy young gentleman who falls in with bad company at a race meeting, and looses all his money.
One of a rare series of nine plates titled “The Life of a Nobleman” by the English portrait painter and engraver George Dawe (1781-1829) updating Hogarth's 'Rake's Progress (1735).
This engraving is early in the series, but through time our gent is introduced to drinking and gambling, he loses his fortune, borrows money from a loan shark, joins the army, fights a duel and dies from his wounds. As with Rake’s Progress the narrative of the series mocks the excesses of Georgian society and warns of the consequences of moral abandonment.
A good clean print with bright and vibrant hand colouring within a handsome gilt gesso and wood decorated frame. Both frame and print are in first class condition.
