Antique Indian Embroidery on Velvet, 2.23m X 1.12m

19th century
Description

This is a highly unusual textile. Embroidered in silk on velvet, the design displays influences from neighbouring regions in Persia. There is also an inscription which reads 'Bokhara Sharif'. This is a very pretty example of central Asian textile art. The small botehs around the star-like medallion sparkle like stars in a midnight sky. This embroidery would be a superb wall hanging in many settings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Traditional Indian velvet embroidery, often associated with regional techniques such as Zardozi or Aari work, involves hand-stitching silk, metallic, or cotton threads onto a dense velvet base, historically produced for royal courts and ceremonial furnishings.

These pieces generally utilise a base fabric of silk or cotton velvet, decorated with hand-stitched silk floss, twisted metallic wires, or metal spangles to create raised floral and geometric patterns.

Authentic historic embroideries show minor irregularities in the hand stitching, natural softening of the velvet pile, slight oxidisation on metallic threads, and age-consistent fading on the reverse side.

A large embroidered textile can be mounted on a frame as large-scale wall art, draped over the back of a contemporary sofa, or placed across the foot of a bed as a decorative accent.

Keep the fabric away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and fiber damage, vacuum gently using a low-suction mesh cover attachment, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning.
