Antique Salt-bag, Sanjabi Kurds, Kurdistan.

1900 - 1920
Description

This magnificent namakdan (salt-bag) has been in my personal collection for many years and sadly, it is time for it to be passed into the hands of someone who will treasure it like I have.

It is one of the largest salt-bags I've encountered in my many years of dealing and collecting and certainly one of the most majestic bags I've come across. Woven in complimentary weft-weave on the front, it is important to look at the back and observe the fantastic chevron pattern in beautiful shades of vegetable colours. I wonder what the weaver was thinking when she inserted these chevrons? Could they symbolically represent flowing water? Quite possibly, as salt and water were vital in the everyday lives of these Sanjabi Kurd nomads.

The bag is in near-mint condition with its original tassels symbolising 'good luck' and 'good fortune' and its original long, braided handle for transporting the bag.

Illustrated in my third edition 'Tribal Rugs - Treasures of the Black Tent' on page 239, this bag was made during the early part of the 20th century.

Size: 77cm x 38cm (2' 6" x 1' 3").

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
