A Red Walnut English Double fusee Bracket Clock by Russells of Liverpool c1870
The very well made Red Walnut case was clearly an expensive purchase when new. At this time when the market was being flooded by cheaper German mass-produced clocks, the English Bracket Clock was a luxury only available to very decerning purchasers. These late clock had to be the very best of its type and this clock demonstrates this well.
The substantial movement with “maintaining” power and fine deadbeat escapement along with five spoke wheels is made to the highest of standards, The movement was almost certainly “bought in” and carries the number 1873 and the letter “T”. I am unsure if this is Thwaites and Reed or Thomas Mercer. It is known that Thomas Mercer did supply clocks Russells of Liverpool.
The highly engraved gilt dial is simply stunning and is beautifully proportioned with two subsidiary dials and the silvered nameplate below the 12 o’clock
Thomas Russell of Liverpool was apprenticed to William Wakefield in Broughton on Furness and moved to Liverpool in the early part of the 19th century. He worked alongside his son, also Thomas Russell in his later years and died in 1830.The company received several Royal Warrants and specialised in unusual clocks, watches and chronometers. Signing their watches with ‘Makers to Queen Victoria.
