Description

The art of silk embroidery was well developed in Uzbekistan during the 19th century. Fine silk embroideries on cotton backgrounds, referred to as 'suzanis', were often made in domestic settings by the womenfolk in preparation for a bride's dowry. Therefore they were often made to a very high standard and endowed with great meaning. Various locations in Uzbekistan such as Bokhara, Nurata and Kermina all developed their own individual style and character. Samarkand was no exception. Easily recognisable by their large flowerheads and flowing meandering vines, Samarkand suzanis have an elegance and sophistication of their own. This piece fits into the group. It has a dramatic suzani with large, elegantly drawn flowerheads and meandering vines, but it has a simplicity which suggests a provincial origin. It is totally charming and extremely decorative, and would look wonderful on a bed, wall or as a table cover. Backed and lined.

Suzani, derived from the Persian word for needle, refers to decorative hand-embroidered textile panels traditionally created by women in Central Asian countries such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kazakhstan. Historically produced as part of a brides dowry, these textiles were presented to the groom on the wedding day as symbols of family connection and status.

Suzanis are typically crafted on narrow strips of woven cotton or silk fabric that are basted together, drawn on, and then separated so multiple embroiderers can work simultaneously before final assembly. Embroidery is executed using silk or cotton threads with techniques such as chain stitch, tambour stitch, and basma stitch over intricate floral and geometric motifs.

Authentic 19th-century Samarkand Suzanis display distinct characteristics including narrow joined ground fabric strips, natural plant-based dyes with subtle colour variations, and visible hand-drawn guidelines beneath the stitching. Regional Samarkand designs feature prominent red rosette motifs surrounded by dark green or navy leafy vines and circular medallion arrangements.

Antique silk Suzanis require protection from direct sunlight, humidity, and pest exposure to prevent fiber degradation.
