Victorian Scottish Red Agate Silver Padlock Bracelet

19th century
Description

A fabulous chunky Victorian Scottish agate and sterling silver bracelet dating from around 1860.

The polished faceted agate barrels are beautiful shades of deep carnelian orange with lighter and darker striped bands.

The bracelet secures with a padlock which is engraved with a silver scrolling design on one side and a polished shield-shaped agate on the other. The lock is held secure with a silver safety chain.

Scottish jewellery was made popular by Queen Victoria from the mid 1800s, when she frequently visited Scotland and her Scottish castle Balmoral.

In very good antique condition, the lock clicks shut securely and works as it should. There are a few tiny nicks to the edges of the agate facets and a chip where there appears to have been a historic repair and one of the silver caps has been glued back (see photos) but none of these is noticeable when the bracelet is worn.

Size: Just over 7 inches inside circumference. Locket measures 20mm across x 32mm down. The safety chain is 3 inches long. Each silver-capped agate barrel is 2.5cm long.

Weight: 41g.
