Victorian Hukin & Heath Silver and Glass Vase

19th century
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is a late Victorian hallmarked sterling silver and glass vase. It was assayed in Birmingham between 2nd May 1890 and July 1890, and made by Hukin & Heath (John Thomas Heath & John Hartshorne Middleton). The manufacturer is famous for producing pieces designed by Christopher Dresser. This piece is very much in that style but I haven't found any evidence that it was designed by Dresser.

The vase has a triangular rim with a sterling silver mount. The glass body has lozenge designs, is waisted, with a globular base.

There is a crescent shaped mark on the underside of the vase but itherwise it appears to be in good order, with wear commensurate with age.

It was quite difficult to get the shape and texture of the glass to show well with my camera so I have taken photographs with the light in front and behind the vase to try to give an idea of how it looks.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the late Victorian period, silversmiths frequently partnered with glassmakers to craft functional tableware and decorative vases featuring hallmarked silver collars and rims.

These items consist of hand-blown or moulded lead glass bodies combined with sterling silver or silver-plated collars attached around the upper aperture.

Authentic examples feature stamped maker marks such as H&H alongside official British hallmark stamps that specify the silver purity, assay office, and date letter.

Position the piece on a wooden sideboard, console, or window sill where natural light highlights the glass texture and silver collar contrast.

Clean the glass body using warm water and mild detergent while avoiding submersion of the silver join, and polish the silver collar gently with a dry microfibre cloth.
