Agamemnon, Greek Hero of the Trojan War ~ Fine and Early Bronze Clock

~ French - Circa 1830 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A monumental early bronze and Sienna Marble clock by the superb maker Honoré Pons. The stunning sculpture depicts Agamemnon who led the Greeks to victory at Troy as told in Homer's Iliad. He stands on the rocks, sea washing around him with fist raised to lead the battle on to Trojan soil. The stern of his vessel, with stylised serpents tail, behind.

The clock's dial is mounted in the massive Sienna Marble plinth with paw feet and a frieze of applied acanthus scrolls. The dial surround is modelled as an acanthus wreath, an allegory for victory. The dial itself is silvered bronze with an engine-turned centre and beautiful, original blued steel hands. The rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of excellent quality and is fitted with the earlier silk suspension. The clockmaker is Honoré Pons, is listed in Loomes and Baillie and is credited as reviving the clockmaking industry in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont near Dieppe. He was sent there in 1806 by the Minister of the Interior and over the next decades built up clockmaking there until his death in 1857. This movement has the mark of "gold medal 1827" on the backplate, see picture below. Movement is in excellent, clean and running condition having been fully cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. We have a video clip available of the clock running and striking, please ask.

Condition of the case is very good, the bronze is in lovely original condition, the original patination has some nice wear to the high posts. The marble has some old repair work to the right hand side lower panel, and the left hand side upper panel. The front lower panel has some light cracks but the marble is solid and has a good colour and polish. The dial is also in excellent condition, stunning fresh silvering and lettering.

Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
