Description
A large original folio aquatint of Trajan’s Column in Rome published in Regency London in 1820 by Mathew Dubourg. Dubourg was a British painter and engraver, active between 1786-1838 and this impressive engraving is plate 17 from his esteemed series of Grand Tour aquatints titled “VIEWS OF THE REMAINS OF ANCIENT BUILDINGS IN ROME AND ITS VICINITY” London, Published in 1820. A dynamic composition with figures in period dress promenading at the base of the historic column. A large basilica beyond. The Roman emperor Trajan’s magnificent triumphal monument celebrating his victory in the Dacian Wars, still stands today in Rome with remarkably unchanged surrounding topography. The column was essential viewing for gentlefolk on the Grand Tour in the early nineteenth century. In a very good clean state with strong and vibrant colour printed on a strong wove paper. Within an impressive and substantial period gilt gesso and wood decorated frame with gadroon back edge and gilt sight edge. Both engraving and frame are in first class condition.
