Fabulous Aesthetic Movement French Silver Niello Vesta Case by Joseph Ettlinger, Import Marks for London 1882

Description

This is a divine 19th Century French *niello silver vesta case. The front decorated with a pair of birds perched on a branch within leafy decorations. The cartouche engraved and dated 1885. The back with a single bird amongst flowering branches. The sprung hinged cover opening to reveal a gilt interior and a full and crisp set of hallmarks.

The base with striker

* Niello is a black mixture of copper, silver and lead sulphides, used as an inlay on engraved or etched metal, usually silver.

Hallmarks:

Small French guarantee mark.

Maker’s marks JE for Joseph Ettlinger partner of Triefus & Ettlinger, 103 Rue du Temple, Paris.

Import Marks for London.

Date letter “G” for 1882.

Duty Mark.

London Assay mark.

Dimensions:

Length: 6cm / 2.3 inches.

Width: 3.5cm / 1.3 inch.

Depth: 1cm / 0.4 inch.

Weight: 39 g / 1.3 ounces.

Condition:

Excellent.

Niello decorations in very good condition.Clean interior.

Strong hinge.

Very clear set of marks.
