Description

The style of the box is representative of one of the very earliest writing boxes and were made over a limited period during the very late 1700’s - very early 1800’s, following which the familiar rectangular style virtually dominated throughout the 19th century. The box features an oval centre with typical neoclassic berry and leaf inlays set with a burr yew surround. The outer border to the lid is slightly unusual and resembles a woven ribbon with twin circular inlays. Subtle and nice example of the hot sand technique of shading to the ribbons. All inlays are original, complete and in very good condition as is all of the exterior veneer. The inlays would have once featured very vibrant red and green colouring and these are still very much in evidence though have of course faded considerably and contribute to the aged charm of the box. Hinges and lock in very good condition with a replacement working key supplied. The lid opens to reveal what can only be described as a surprising interior!! The lining to the lid interior and base section would originally have been a very pale pink paper and this has been replaced with a marble effect paper…..all in very clean condition. The office section comprises of the standard inkpot/pounce pot sections and longer central section that has had a replacement lid fitted. The pots are of course later additions. The storage space beneath the writing platform easily accommodates A4 paper. It is of course the replacement hinged writing platform that provides the element of surprise and is obviously unique. Whoever made the marquetry panel obviously had considerable experience and skill and it needs to be examined closely to be fully appreciated. The reality is that the marquetry work more than likely took longer to produce and required greater skills than the making of the box. Excellent selection and positioning of a wide variety of veneers making good use of burr, straight grain, tight grain, grain direction and contrast in particular on the tree and the thatched roof of the cottage. True enough, for the keen collector the manner of restoration may perhaps be frowned upon but it cannot be denied that for someone it was a labour of love, that a box well over 200 years old has been nicely preserved for use by future generations, and that it has an unexpected charm about it and is of course unique.
