A Fine Grand Tour Italian Sorrento Ware Marquetry Adjustable Mirror

This impressive and beautifully made olive wood mid-19th century adjustable traveling mirror is designed for use on a chest of drawers or dressing table and would have originally been a lady’s travel piece. This fine example is a showpiece for the workmanship this region of Italy became renowned for. It has a central mirror with a highly decorative fretwork frame with marquetry bandings and inlaid panels depicting several rural male and female figures. The central section has two similarly decorative panels which fold over and protect the mirror when traveling. When open they show this piece’s full beauty and complexity. At the back, there is an adjustable folding easel that allows the mirror to free stand at different angles to aid its use. The condition is very good. There are small shrinkage cracks at the base of the central frame which are fully secure with no weakness and should be described as minor age-related movement in the wood. £595
