A fine and rare English blue & white pottery ‘Mess ware’ tea bowl c.1850 decorated around the body with ships in battle and sailors celebrating captured booty with the Queen’s young head in a circular cartouche on one side and the Mess number on the other, finished with a crown inside and a decorative rim border in transfer. These charming bowls were held by sailors in both hands and contained the equivalent of several ordinary cups of tea, the Mess number appears upside down on the bowl because they were inverted for storage so it could be instantly read. This bowl has a small chip on the underside of the rim and typical staining commensurate with age and genuine use otherwise no other issues; it measures 6 ½ inches in diameter.
