Gary Wright Antiques Ltd has dated this piece to the Before 1700 period.
The hinged lid opening with two shallow compartments inside the lid, with the large storage compartment below; the lid hasp concealing the lock revealed by a secret sliding mount to the escutcheon. The fall front opening to reveal two drawers, above each drawer is a slender secret compartment and the central drawer divider and the sides being secret, slide out compartments. The sides retaining their original gilt brass carrying handles. The coffre forte now standing on an C18th rosewood stand with book matched kingwood panels to the front and the sides, with pierced corner brackets raised on deeply chamfered square legs. The gilt brass mounts, as well as their decorative appeal were designed to strengthen and protect the casket on its various journeys.
