Late Georgian Black Dot Paste Drop Earrings

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Eva Antiques

An absolutely stunning pair of earrings from the late Georgian period. The earrings are made from rose gold over silver and have the most bright and beautiful paste stones I have seen. The central stone is a pear shape and has a black dot at the centre back. Black dot paste was created to mimic the diamond cuts of the time and had black dots added to the back of the stones to represent the large culets in the diamonds of the period. These pear shaped stones are surrounded by little round pastes, also extremely bright.
These earrings look very beautiful in the ear and glimmer prettily as they would have done in the candlelight at the time. These drops likely started life as part of a larger piece of jewellery and the plain shepherds hooks have been added later.
