In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood on the far side of the box is pushed. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box which pulls out when a brass pin is lifted. It also comes with its original book rest which slots into the outside and the top can then be held up at an angle by the brass latch inside.
It is in excellent condition for its age and has been sympathetically restored. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it displays very well inside and out. There are no major damages to the wood exterior, just one small split in the top. There are some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental. It is clean and tidy inside and the patination is beautiful. There are no keys for the box.
