18th Century Windsor Comb Back Chair

18th century
Description

A superb example of a primitive Windsor comb-back chair with a solid Elm seat dating from the late 18th / early 19th century. It has a primitive stick back design with 'comb' shaped top rail. The chair stands on four simple turned legs joined by a H-stretcher. It is a good comfortable chair, sturdy and well made with a shaped seat.

It is approximately 38" (97cm) high and the arms are 25" (64cm) wide. The seat is 15" (38cm) deep and stands 17" (43cm) high.

It is in good condition for its age. It has developed a lovely deep patina and is structurally very sound, having had the joints gently and sympathetically strengthened. There is an old repair below the seat where a metal plate has been put across a split. There is a similar repair below the mid-rail (see photos). It has developed a wonderful aged patina. It is not without some signs of age and use but nothing detrimental and it displays beautifully.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions please ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
