Georgian Longcase Clock, Barton, Oldham

Description

A Lancashire Georgian period longcase clock. A well proportioned walnut case with an arched hood pediment and carved wooden central finial. Fretwork below the pediment and tapered hood side columns. Trunk side columns and canted base sides. A decorative arched trunk door. A square brass and silvered dial with silvered chapter ring, date and seconds. An 8-day duration mechanism striking the hours on a bell.

The Barton family of clockmakers worked in the Manchester area in the 18th century. This example by Edward Barton of Oldham dates to circa 1790.
