Dated c.1820, this mahogany bow-fronted mercury stick barometer has a flat moulded pediment and urn-shaped cistern cover.
The barometer register plates are bone, the inches divided into tenths and with a vernier. The plates are interestingly signed Thos. Harris & Son, 52 Opposite the British Museum, London. The mercury tube is of wider bore than average, and has a pale blue backing between the plates, to give a higher contrast and aid the reading.
The heavy beveled bow-fronted glass is as new.
The trunk has highly grained mahogany veneers, fitted with a mercury thermometer with matching bone register plate.
Altogether, the condition of this barometer is excellent, all original with no signs of restoration at all.
Thomas Harris & Son were opticians to the Royal family and had branches across London from 1806 to after 1900. They occupied the premises at 52 Great Russell Street (opposite the British Museum) between 1817-1887.
