Lifting Turnips Oil Painting By Lance Calkin (1859-1936)

A fine oil on canvas by highly regarded artist Lance Calkin (1859-1936). The painting is quite dark in tone and represents a dawn or dusk, a lady is out in the garden lifting turnips and putting them into her apron to take to the kitchen. There are some beautiful elements to the painting such as the face and the remnant bonfire smoking in the background. The painting has a great feeling of time and place and I would expect it to have been painted outside and quickly by this very capable artist. The painting does appear to be signed to the lower left but it is obscured by the dark colour, it is also signed verso in large script. Lance Calkin was born in London, the son of a musician, he was privately educated and attended the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal Academy Schools. In 1895 he became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Oil Colours. He exhibited widely and profusely including an amazing 30 times at the Royal Academy.
