French Bronze Horse & Jockey

19th century
Description

J. V. CHEMIN: a good quality mid-late 19th century BRONZE sculpture which depicts a horse and mounted jockey.

Particularly finely detailed and showing the longer stirrups of the period, the jockey holds the reins in his left hand and whip in his right. Good colour and patina; signed to the integral base. 10ins wide; 10.75ins high; 3.75ins deep.

*** Jospeh Victor CHEMIN (1825-1901) was born in Paris and was one of Barye's successful students. He first exhibited in the Salon in 1851 and then regularly from 1857 until 1894. Sculpture of racehorses was popular in Paris, and this is a fine elegant example.
