17th century
Description

A Superb 17th century James 1st armorial fireback, decorated with royal coat of arms and dated 1618.

The Fireback having Curved ogee-arched of rectangular form with egg and dart moulding along top, supported by Ionic pilasters; English Stuart royal shield, garter, helm, crown, motto and supporters; date below and either side of garter.

The Fireback has lovely puddling in the back, along with some imperfections and a line running through the shield showing the join line from the carved panel this was once sand cast from.

Inscription: HONI SOIT QVI MAL Y PENSE / 16 18

Honi soit qui mal y pense is a French maxim used as the motto of the British chivalric Order of the Garter. It is translated as "May he be shamed who thinks badly of it" or "Shame be to him who thinks evil of it" or "Evil be to him that evil thinks".

This fireback was manufactured in 1618 and was probably made in the Forest of Dean area of England.

Overall the fireback is in excellent condition.
