Description

An excellent example of an early Georgian period chinoiserie longcase clock by Samuel Weston of Stratford c1730
The profusely painted case having the rarer two colour scheme of green and red with gold relief paintings of buildings, people and rarer birds, Butterflies, clouds and the rising sun. The Lacquer case having butt joint between the side and backboard all made for oak. cases normally have the backboard recessed between the sides making the construction different.
The paining in the door having buildings with red painted walls against a green background along with a red chequer board flooring to a pagoda. The bird being a large Chinese Crested Crane in a water scene with a butterfly attending a flower. The base having a similar image but this time the bird is taking flight against the setting/Rising sun.
The very well made five knopped pillar movement with the centre pillar latched, rack striking and original anchor escapement is currently being overhauled in the workshop and will come with a full three years guarantee.
The cast brass dial having fine engraving of foliage behind and aside the urn spandrels and stylized dolphins making a pleasant change from the plain polished backplate. The disc in the arch stating the name Samuel Weston, Stratford.
A good opportunity to acquire an early chinoiserie Longcase clock by a good maker in a most wonderful condition! as always.. pictures really do not do this clock justice and the clock is best seen in the flesh as the colours and stance is far better than the images do justice
