Victorian Dutch Miniature Silver Bureau Schoonhoven Hooijkaas

A pretty miniature Dutch silver bureau with all over embossed decoration of romantic country scenes of musicians, men presenting bouquets of flowers, shepherds sitting with sheep, maidens with baskets, etc. with a hinged, pierced cover that folds out to reveal an interior with 6 sectioned pigeon holes. Set on tapered legs with bun feet and barley twist stretchers.

Full English import marks to the base for Sheffield 1895, importer Samuel Boyce Landeck and also a set of marks for Schoonhoven and standard 930. There is no makers' mark but the same set of Schoonhoven marks have been seen on pieces that are further marked for Hubertus Hooijkaas so this is a possible attribution. The folding cover has a lion passant mark, the interior bears the Dutch lion and key mark (indicating made for export) and there is also a gothic letter L stamped to the front left leg.

It measures 5.7cm (2 1/4") wide, 4.3cm (1 11/16") deep and 5.7cm (2 1/4") high. It weighs 81g / 2.6ozt. Condition is very good overall but there have been 2 repairs to the stretchers and so the front left leg is approx. 2mm shy of the table surface but this isn't noticeable aesthetically. The hinge is fine, surface wear is light and the marks are all clear.
