John D.walker "...Aberdeen" Watercolour

1900 - 1920
Description

John Dobby Walker (1863-1925) was a watercolour painter born in Bradford who started his working career as a coach trimmer and painter at Sheethams, a local coach building firm. He studied painting at the Bradford Church Institute and, following a spell as an art teacher, devoted his time to painting, mainly landscape views. He painted mostly around his home in the West Riding but also travelled and exhibited widely both throughout the U.K. and on the continent. His work is now held in good private collections and also in Public Art Galleries.

"Young Firs, Nursery Near Aberdeen" is a good landscape watercolor by Walker measuring 10"x 14". It is mounted and framed in a quality frame giving an overall size of 19"x 23".

Please see our website www.mctague.co.uk for a good selection of quality oil paintings, watercolours and rare prints, or visit our retail gallery in Harrogate, Yorkshire, where we are normally open Wednesdays – Saturdays.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

British watercolour landscapes of this era are recognised for atmospheric light, fluid wash techniques, and detailed depictions of countryside scenes under changing weather conditions.

Artists used water-soluble pigments ground with gum arabic binders, applied onto heavy cotton or linen rag paper mounted on board.

Authentic period pieces exhibit age-appropriate paper discolouration, natural tonal wash variation, artist signatures, and original framing or gallery labels.

Display the artwork in a simple dark wood frame alongside neutral wall paint, warm timber furniture, or textured fabrics to complement traditional and contemporary spaces.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, house it behind UV-filtering glass with acid-free backing materials, and maintain a stable, low-humidity environment.
