This charming portrait is an example of the type of small-scale panel portraits, often of splendid beauties of the time, that became fashionable in the mid-17th century. The portrait represents Elizabeth Cavendish, Countess of Devonshire (1619 – 19 November 1689). Born Lady Elizabeth Cecil, she was one of the twelve children of William Cecil, 2nd Earl of Salisbury, and his wife, the former Lady Catherine Howard. William was a confidant of King Charles I and was made a privy councillor in 1626. Lady Elizabeth married the handsome William Cavendish, 3rd Earl of Devonshire on 4th March 1639, and she became the Countess of Devonshire. The couple had two children. Their home was Chatsworth House (and is still the home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, passing down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family). She died at the age of about seventy, and was buried on 21st November 1689 in the Duke of Ormond''s vault in Henry VII''s chapel, Westminster Abbey.
