Continental Hanau Silver Brandy Warmer Jug Import Marks 1899

19th century
Description

A very attractive and unusual small silver jug set on 4 cast lion paw feet with a side pouring handle, part silver and beautifully turned ebony, most likely to be for warming brandy or similar. Lovely embossed decoration of vertical concave flutes with overlaid garland swags with roundels, ribbons and acanthus leaves. An ornate border under the rim of flowers in a chain link and the base is rounded and of melon fluted form. The original hallmarks are stamped underneath, partly obscured but look likely to be Hanau and "930" standard. London import marks stamped to the side for 1899, import agent John George Smith.

It measures 6.4cm (2 1/2") high, 10.8cm (4 1/4") wide across the handle and 5.1cm (2") across the body. It weighs 66g / 2.1ozt. Condition is very good; there is a very small repair inside the lip which cannot be seen outside. No other damage or repairs and surface wear is very light. The legs have been slightly reshaped as is common.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
