The Halt - Antique Oil Painting

Description

19th century oil on panel signed by the Dutch artist Cornelis Albertus Schermer (1824 - 1915). The painting shows two Hussars that have stopped for refreshment. The painting is signed by the aritst and is mounted in a quality guilt frame of the period.

Schermere studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and lived and worked in Dinant until 1879. After this period he returned to working in the Hague.

Schermer's work is displayed at the Städtische Museum in The Hague and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Schermer was a renowned horse painter whose work made up a large part of the genre.

His themes ranged from stable interiors and horse markets to elegant hunting societies and horse races.
