19th century
For Sale by Curious Antiques
Description

Large ,heavy (2.3 kg) and impressive antique French barbers bleeding bowl,c1880. This is the best example I have seen with great colour/patina and lovely decoration. It has the typical cut away section and is in white metal/pewter. There is a central panel depicting a man in period costume being bled by a barber/surgeon. The outside of the bowl is decorated with script " Le melonogene dicquomare le rouen chenoeux a la barbe" (or similar, sorry French isn't a strength!). Overall condition is good with only minor surface wear/rubbing and Verdigris. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like to view the item.

Size: 35 cm long x 28 cm wide x 3 cm thick/deep. Weight 2.3 kg. I will happily ship worldwide.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Historically used in the 18th and 19th centuries by barber-surgeons, these basins served dual purposes for shaving and bloodletting procedures. The crescent-shaped cutout on the rim allowed the bowl to fit closely against a clients neck or limb during use.

These basins were most commonly crafted from pewter, brass, copper, or glazed earthenware. Heavy pewter alloys were preferred for their durability, malleability, and ease of cast decoration.

Authentic period examples display signs of hand-casting, minor surface patination, uneven oxidisation, and occasionally maker touchmarks or regional advertising inscriptions cast into the rim.

Metal vessels of this shape make striking wall-mounted display pieces or curio shelf accents, adding tactile interest and historic provenance to libraries, bathrooms, or eclectic gallery displays.

Preserve antique pewter by dusting softly with a dry microfibre cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical polishes, which strip natural historical patination and surface oxidisation.
