A fine novelty picture or photograph frame made from heavy polished bronze in the form of a garden gate; about as charming as they come.
The front is mounted with a cast bronze naturalistic garden gate with surrounding flora and foliage; the gate having a blue enamelled sign "Please Shut The Gate".
To the left of the sign is a working gate bolt which is used to open the frame revealing two glazed apertures.
The back of the frame has a folding easel stand engraved by the retailer, Frederic Aldis of 11 Belgrave Mansions (Belgravia being the smartest London neighbourhood, home to the gentry and aristocracy). The back of the frame is also signed by the maker, the top notch manufacturer, George Betjemann and Sons. It is also blessed with an English design registration diamond allowing us to date it accurately, being registered on 19th February 1867, mid Victorian in era.
Quite wonderful in excellent condition measuring 6 1/8" x 5 1/4" x 1".
