In A Nutshell Antiques and Interiors has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Below the writing surface is a secret compartment hiding three small drawers which springs open when a piece of wood next to the pen tray is pushed. There is also a long drawer on the side of the box and it comes with its original book rest which slots into the outside and the top can then be held up at an angle by the brass latch inside.
It is in excellent condition for its age and it comes with its original working key. It has been lightly cleaned and polished and it displays very well inside and out. There are no major damages to the wood exterior, it is clean and tidy inside and the patination is beautiful. It is missing the small brass rod that would lock the drawer shut when the box is closed and there are some small knocks and minor signs of age and use but nothing detrimental.
