Pair of Papier Mache Armchairs C.1860.

Description

Remarkable pair of papier mache armchairs c.1860. Beautiful shapely frames with roll-over backs and arms in Japanned or black lacquered papier mache. Fabulous decoration, featuring a romantic ruined castle and priory in inlaid mother of pearl on the backrests, surrounded by an elaborate floral pattern border of further inlay and gilt detail. Drop-in seat pads with vintage buttoned silk upholstery. Decoration continues across the apron and down the cabriole front legs. Raised on the original white pot castors. Very good condition, with serviceable upholstery. Cleaned and waxed in our workshops.
