French Trumeau Overmantle Mirror or Pier Glass C.1880.

Description

Late 19th.c. French trumeau overmantle mirror or pier glass c.1880. Just 29" wide with a hand painted top panel in oil on canvas over a small mirror below. Painted panel (33" x 25") featuring an allegorical scene in the neo-classical style with the figure of Justice, with her sword and scales, offering protection to a woman whilst another figure carrying a flaming torch wrestles with the serpent in the top left hand corner. Slim moulded and gilded wooden frame with gesso decoration. Some minor wear and damage to the frame, otherwise original condition.
