Unusual 19th.c. Portrait of a Lady C.1895.

19th century
Description

Extraordinary late 19th.c. portrait of a lady c.1895. In oil on canvas, painted in a slightly naive style but superbly detailed. A half length portrait of a young woman with dark hair and large brown eyes in an embroidered dress with lace collar. With a peacock feather fan on her lap and holding a letter in her hand. Beside her stands a stationery cabinet with small drawers, one of which is open. On top of the cabinet stands a blue and white oriental vase with a flower arrangement on a short carved oriental stand. Against an striking exotic looking background of high hills, with trees, flowers and birds. Artist and sitter are unfortunately unknown (could it be a self portrait perhaps?). Tantalisingly though the letter may hold a clue – it seems to read Remaining faithfully yours Amanda (surname indistinct) together with date August 1st 1895. In generally good condition with some damage and holes all away from the centre of the canvas. Presented unframed on the original stretcher. With a stamp for the famous British art suppliers Rowney & Co on the rear.

Dimensions: width 25", height 30".

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
