A fine French Impressionist/ Post Impressionist oil circa 1920's
Oil on canvas: 61cmx52cm
Good antique lime waxed gesso wood salon frame: 83cmx73cm
View of the famous Provencal/ Cote d'Azur hill town Saint Paul de Vence on a fine day.
Interesting viewpoint and composition looking up the hill from below the town spotted with the traditional pale stone dwellings and the old town wall defences. The main focus is a disused ancient water wheel building with overgrown vegatation on the aquaduct. Saint Paul had many water wheel mills for pressing olives and grinding wheat. Pure brilliant blue cloudless sky.
Painted en plein air with wonderful sense of light and fluent brushwork.
Good condition.
Viewing available in our town centre gallery.
Worldwide shipping
Saint-Paul-de-Vence (before 2011: Saint-Paul in Occitan: Sant Pau) is a commune in the Alpes-Maritimes department in southeastern France. One of the oldest medieval towns on the French Riviera, it is well known for its modern and contemporary art museums and galleries such as Fondation Maeght which is located nearby.
Saint-Paul-de-Vence has long been a haven of the famous, mostly due to the La Colombe d'Or hotel, whose former guests include Jean-Paul Sartre and Pablo Picasso. During the 1960s, the village was frequented by French actors Yves Montand, Simone Signoret
and Lino Ventura, and poet Jacques Prévert. Saint-Paul is also well known for the artists who have lived there, such as Jacques Raverat, Gwen Raverat and Marc Chagall and more recently the couple Bernard-Henri Lévy and Arielle Dombasle. Former Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman has a home there. American writer James Baldwin died there in 1987. British actor Donald Pleasence died there in 1995.
Miami FC player Vincenzo Rennella was born in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
