Rare C19th Italian 'Grand Tour' souvenir bronze reduction sculpture , after the antique, of "The Wrestlers" or Pancrastinae.

Superbly-cast and detailed small-scale desk-top bronze sculpture of the iconic ancient marble group known as "The Ufizzi Wrestlers", mounted upon it's original block base of black 'Nero Belgio' marble .

The Wrestlers is a Roman marble sculpture after a lost Greek original of the 3rd century BCE, now exhibited in the Ufizzi Museums collection, Florence, Italy .

The two young men are depicted engaged in the sport of Pankration , a kind of wrestling similar to the present-day sport of mixed martial arts. The sculpture shows the pair engaged in a struggle which superbly defines and exaggerates their muscular structure and toned naked physiques.

In excellent original condition with a good rich colour and patination. The casting has been made in sections and has evidence of 'Roman joints' to the intricately modelled arms and legs of the opponents.

Mounted on the original marble plinth base.
