Agra Carpet, 2.93m X 1.67m (9'8" X 5'5"), Circa 1890

19th century
Description

This unusual antique carpet has a classical repeating 'Herati' pattern, but in a striking colour combination of sea green and burgundy which one only sees in Agra carpets. There is quite a lot of abrash in the colour which makes the piece very visually dynamic. Note that the design changes in the border, but the colour combination remains the same, highly unusual and quite elegant. The high pile gives the carpet a very impressionistic feeling. Very decorative. Note too the great size.. Professionally cleaned and ready for immediate use.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Agra carpets originate from the city of Agra in northern India, where carpet weaving flourished during the Mughal Empire from the 16th century onwards. Production experienced a major revival in the late 19th century, driven by European demand for high-quality, hand-knotted floor coverings that adapted classical Persian motifs into distinct Indian designs.

Traditional Agra carpets are hand-knotted using spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool foundation. Dyes were historically derived from natural plant and mineral sources, producing saturated tones such as madder red, indigo blue, and soft saffron yellows.

Authentic late 19th-century Agra carpets feature high knot density, asymmetrical Persian knots, and a soft wool pile. Design signatures include large-scale floral palmettes, spiralling vines, and complex border systems, accompanied by natural dye variations and soft, age-related patina in the fibres.

An antique carpet serves as a foundational element to anchor seating arrangements or dining areas. Designers frequently pair the rich colour palette and intricate patterns of antique floor coverings with streamlined modern furniture or minimalist decor to create architectural contrast.

Preserving antique wool carpets requires regular gentle vacuuming using a suction-only attachment to avoid damaging the pile. Spills should be blotted immediately with a dry cloth, professional cleaning should be undertaken by textile specialists, and a quality rug pad should be placed underneath to prevent wear.
