Description

An unusual Georgian writing box that oozes antique charm and character. Measures approximately 13” x 8 ½” x 5 ½”. Though it could very easily be given a face lift by cleaning the interior brassware and veneer and replacing the material to the writing platform this item is one of ‘those’ that I believe is best left as to restore would arguably be at the cost of the character of the item. Typical Georgian side handles with the correct patina and small indentations where the handles have come to rest countless times over the past 200+ years. Side drawer of solid mahogany construction with well crafted dovetail joints accessed by removing a brass locking rod located to the box interior. The box carcass is of mahogany with an outer skin of very thick veneer. Contrasting ‘rope twist’ edging to the top and all four verticals with cross grain border to the top. Very attractive inlays to the corners, though at first glance they all look identical they are certainly hand cut as there are small variations when inspected close. Nice example of the hot sand shading technique employed during the period. Oval inset to the centre depicting a vase of flowers that I am certain would have been very vibrant in colour when made but has mellowed nicely to contribute towards the character of the piece. The lid closes square on what is possibly the original hinges. The lock has been replaced with a lock of very fine manufacture, made by ‘Barron’. The key shown is for decorative purposes only though I am certain that a key could be cut…but best left to those with experience when for a lock of such quality. The lid can be set at various angles by way of a brass riser/stay and placing the replacement batten along the back edge of the lid. The prongs on the batten engage perfectly within the original brass lined apertures. Both storage spaces beneath the writing surface are in good condition. There are a couple of ready reckoners adhered to the underside of one half and a wax seal with a coat of arms and some handwriting beneath the other. I cannot make out the words clearly but the words include ‘’Grand Papa’ and perhaps ‘Minchay’ and ends perhaps with ‘heart Wellington New Zealand’……This box has possibly travelled the globe!! Remarkably I believe that the velvet surface is original and though worn is virtually fully intact across all of the 3 fold lines!!!! The office section comprises of a removable 4 sided tray rather than a flat lid or dished pen tray. There is a genuine antique inkpot with screw on top and an unusual container for ink that I believe it is of a design to act to prevent ink spillages. Yes the box has a couple of small pieces of edge trim missing and yes, the exterior has been cleaned but the condition of the exterior veneer and inlays are extremely good and it is only when seen in person that the character of the interior can be appreciated…….and hopefully retained. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
