Unusual Victorian Engraved Cut Glass & Silver Plated Hip Spirit Flask

19th century
Description

Very pretty and unusual cut glass spirit / whisky flask by James Dixon & Sons, c.1890. Oval shape, very deep, with 6 double rows of triangular facet cut bands all around the edges. Both sides are beautifully decorated with acid-etched detailing, one side with a stylised central rose surrounded by symmetrical rose leaves and stems with smaller flowers with feathery foliage rising from the top. The other side has entwined bracken fronds wrapping around an etched monogram. The letters would have been IT or JT but given the way these letters were written, they can now easily read as IJ, ST or SJ also but it is so pretty it shouldn't really matter what your name is! Mounted with a silver plated cap with cork lining and makers mark for James Dixon & Sons (a further mark is obscured on the other side).

It measures 14.7cm (5 3/4") long, 9.5cm (3 3/4") wide and 3.8cm (1 1/2") deep. It weighs 330g and has a 300ml capacity. Condition is excellent with no damage or any chips or fritting to the glass. Very light surface wear to the lid and collar with no thinning of the plate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
