Rare British Chess Company Board, 1891-1908

1900 - 1920
Description

A Rare British Chess Company Chess Board, 1891-1908

the alternate sycamore and mahogany squares within a mahogany border, back panel in stained pine, stamped on both sides of the border: BRITISH CHESS Co STROUD GLOS.

46.6cm x 47cm

Chess Squares: 5cm wide

Stock Reference: VS 1854

Reference: Sir Alan Fersht, "Jaques and British Chess Company Chess Sets", Kaissa Publications, 2010, pp. 46-53 on the history of the British Chess Company.

The British Chess Company was founded by William Moffatt and William Hughes in 1891, and for a relatively short period, became the main rival to Jaques. BCC Staunton chess sets feature knight's horse's heads in Xylonite, an early plastic, enabling sets of a decent quality to be produced without the need for skilled craftsmen.

The British Chess Company stopped trading around 1908. Consequently, BCC sets and boards are rare, and now coveted by keen collectors.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
