A mid-19th century solid mahogany BOOK STAND (or sometimes known as a Book "Porter"). Beautifully made with a tall baluster-turned gallery; "S" shaped terminals and with twin carrying handles. The purpose of a 'porter' was for staff to carry books from the library to the master, elsewhere in the house. 16ins wide; 8ins deep.
