Lovely watercolour in excellent condition. This shows Annington Road as a path in 1888 and you can just see the Parish Church of St Botolph through the trees. Botolphs, formerly called Annington, is a tiny village in the Horsham District of West Sussex, England. It is in the Adur Valley 1.5 miles southeast of Steyning on the road between Steyning and Coombes. Botolphs lies on the South Downs Way long distance footpath.
Clem Lambert was a prolific watercolour artist, living all his life in Brighton. He painted in and around Brighton and West Sussex and exhibited at the Royal Academy. Several of his popular watercolours were produced as postcards by the Sussex Daily News.
This painting is very well framed and glazed, signed lower right and with an inscription on the reverse (very hard to read):-
"Saint Botolph near Bramber , (Gift ?), Clem Lambert 1888." It is possible that this was a gift to his long term girlfriend Lucy Sharman who received over 100 of his works during his lifetime.
