Portrait of Mrs Ann Watson
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1768
Image size: 29 inches x 24 inches
Size including frame: 35 inches x 30 inches
A well-executed half portrait of *Mrs Ann Watson by Henry Pickering. The subject wears a red, fur-lined robe over a grey silk gown, held in place by a pearl clasp. Her pearls indicate her wealth and standing in society.
Henry Pickering was a pupil of Hamlet Winstanley (1698-1756) and travelled to Italy to finish his art education. He returned to England around 1740 and initially worked in Nottingham where he made his name painting portraits of notable members of society. His work took him to Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cheshire and North Wales and by 1760 after spending a brief time in Liverpool he settled in Manchester. He was a highly successful artist and received many commissions from wealthy patrons. Like Hudson and Reynolds, he employed Van Aken as his drapery painter. He died in Manchester in 1771.
Examples of his work are held by the National Museum Wales, National Trust, Nottingham Castle Museum, Samuel Johnson Birthplace Museum, University of Cambridge, Walker Art Gallery and the York Museum.
*Mrs Ann Watson (nee Jaques) was born on 11 April, 1734 at Briggate, Leeds the daughter of James Jaques. She married John Watson (1724-1783) on 11 July 1761 in Ealand, Halfax. John was the Rector of Stockport from 1766-1769.
The painting is housed in its original period gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
