A very good 17th Century three panel Lancashire oak coffer with original foliate carved lozenges to front and running C-scroll strap-work to the frieze centred with the initials GF and dated 1675.
Lovely three panel lid on original iron split pin hinges and retaining long stile supports. Joined oak throughout with original pegs and both lid and panels have matching reeding to the stiles. The fielded panels throughout are also bordered with fine reeded detailing demonstrating that lid and coffer started out life together (whereas so many have been adapted in modern times or are marriages).
Particularly rich and attractive colour well developed natural patina throughout, very solid and robust with no worm. One bottom board probably a replacement, small scarfed in repair to underside of lid and later lock and hasp but otherwise as made and with a very pleasing colour and excellent condition.
Lancashire origin, bold original carving.
Solid, heavy, robust and usable with a sound and clean interior.
A really good example in fine original condition.
Dimensions are:
46 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 28 inches high.
