Description

A fine quality and rare English Chinoiserie lacquered bell top bracket clock. A green background with detailed scenes surmounted by a handle and 4 acorn finials. Silk backed gilt fretwork front and side panels. A brass and silvered dial with recessed name cartouche and matted dial centre. A strike/silent lever and date aperture and gilt cast corner spandrels. An 8-day twin fusee mechanism striking the 1/2 hours (unusual on a fusee bracket clock) and the hours on a bell with later anchor escapement. A beautifully engraved Chinoiserie backplate.

There are a few James Smith of London clockmakers recorded, this example dates to circa 1770. One was clockmaker to King George III.
