Fine Ormolu and Sèvres Porcelain Clock by Raingo Frères and Henri Picard of Paris

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1860 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A very fine and early Ormolu (finely gilded bronze) clock mounted with exquisite Sèvres style porcelain panels. It features a beautifully modelled figure of a goddess holding a laurel wreath, a symbol of victory. To each side of the dial are delicately painted panels showing a gentleman and lady in a country setting.

The panels below are finely painted with floral swags. Porcelain has a blue ground with beautifully painted over glaze gilt decoration, each is numbered and signed to the rear (see the picture below). The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with blue lettering and a separate minute ring. Unusually the case is also numbered and signed for the renown bronze founder Henri Picard who often worked for Raingo Frères.

The French movement is by Raingo Frères and is of high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker and thoroughly tested. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock running available.

Zacharie Raingo was apprenticed in Paris in 1790 and went on to establish Raingo Frères in 1813. Initially specialising in precision astronomical clocks and then after 1825 clocks and bronzes. Clients included the Emperor and Empress. The firm exhibited at many of the important exhibitions of the second half of the 19th century and was known for the fine quality of its ormolu.

Henri Picard - The important founder and Gilder Henri Picard was based in Paris at 6, rue Jarente from 1831 to 1839, before moving to 10, rue de la Perle. The firm was active until around 1890. Celebrated for the high quality of his production, Henri Picard supplied many important patrons, including garnand table pieces for the petits appartements of Emperor Napoleon III at the Louvre. An important pair of twelve-light candelabra by Picard remain in the Muse´e du Louvre today.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some very slight wear. The dial is also in excellent condition just some small and faint hairlining between the 12 and 1. porcelain is excellent including the over-glaze gilt decoration which is almost all intact. Please note that this type of clock does not have a glazed bezel or rear door. A stunning original clock in remarkable condition, ready to display.
