Masons Ironstone China was patented in 1813 by Charles James Mason in Staffordshire, England. It is a dense, hard-paste earthenware formulated with slag and flint to imitate imported Chinese porcelain at a lower cost, renowned for its strength and vibrant hand-enamelled patterns.

Antique ironstone is constructed from a mixture of clay, feldspar, and ground ironstone slag or flint, resulting in a durable, vitreous body. Decorative elements combine underglaze transfer-printed outlines with overglaze polychrome enamel decoration.

Authentic pieces often feature printed or impressed makers marks on the underside, such as Masons Patent Ironstone China. Early nineteenth-century examples display substantial weight, slightly blue-tinted glazes, canted or octagonal corners, and detailed hand-enamelled finishing over transfer lines.

Large ironstone platters can be displayed vertically on plate stands along a sideboard or kitchen dresser, mounted on a dining room feature wall using secure wire hangers, or laid flat as a central accent piece on a large dining table.
