Empire Style Secretaire Abattant C.1820.

19th century
Description

Stunning early 19th.c. Empire style secretaire abattant or writing bureau c.1820. Open the fall to reveal a large desk (height 27") with the original tooled leather writing surface. Superb fitted interior featuring an open bookshelf and several small stationery drawers (one locking) plus one long drawer and a couple of secret compartments held closed with hidden spring catches. Original black marble top over a single long frieze drawer above the bureau and a two door cupboard in the base, fitted with three further drawers.

Exceptional flame mahogany veneers, laid in a symmetrical pattern across the front. Flanked with tall columns also veneered to match and with quality gilded and tooled brass mounts to the terminals. Beautiful Empire style gilded mounts to the frieze drawer and above the columns, featuring Classical winged nymphs. Large gilded escutcheon plates also decorated with classical motifs. Mahogany lined interior with original knobs and the same gilded mounts to the columns either side of the open shelf. Fabulous quality, note the oversized brass locks, oak drawer linings and back panel. Excellent colour and condition, cleaned and polished in our workshops. Keys supplied.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
